Pugs are charming? Yes! They are adorable? Yes! They are clownish? Very well! But then there are more things to know about this wonderful breed that come to be so loved and accepted as one of man's best friends. Here, we share some cool facts about pugs.

  • Pugs are about the oldest breed of dogs. Their existence dates back to 400 BC.
  • They are friends to royals and celebrities. Pugs were loyal companions of Chinese emperors- as they were bred to sit on their laps some thousands of years ago- and ever since pugs have steadily found their way into palatial abodes: Prince William of the House of Orange and Queen Victoria fancied having them around.
  • Back in the 17th century, pugs were used as 'watchdogs' by the military. They were also used as 'tracking dogs' to find people.
  • Pug is the official dog of the House of Orange. This came as a prize for some heroic action after Prince William was saved from enemy's attack by a pug named 'Pompey'.
  • On the average, pugs sleep for about 14 hours: a testament to their lazy nature.
  • The word 'pug' was originally used to address the Marmoset- a species of monkey. The name was transferred to the dog [late in the 18th century] because it shared facial characteristic with the marmoset.
  • A pack of pugs is called 'grumble'.
